(Anatomy of the Forgotten War)

[INFORMATION]

[SYNOPSIS]

[DIRECTORS' NOTE]

[SYNOPSIS]

Cannelle, a human rights lawyer at European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR) in Berlin works on the war crime case in Yemen. After a family of six was killed in a Saudi-led air strike in 2016, ECCHR and its allies initiated the case both in ICC and Italy to hold the European arms exporters accountable. STOP RWM, an anti-military group in Sardinia seeks to tackle a weapon factory RWM, a subsidiary of RheinMetall, after the serial number of the

remnant (A4447) from the same air strike was traced back to the factory. Jamal, a refugee from Yemen who came to South Korea in 2018, works for a shipyard to survive with his family in an xenophobic country.

As the ICC case stays inactive for years, Cannele and her team travel to Amsterdam to discuss the strategy with its alies, where Mwatana, a Yemeni partner organization confirms the importance of the international collaboration. Meanwhile in Italy, as the prosecutor repeatedly attempts to discontinue the RWM case, Cannele visits Rome to attend the last hearing with her Italian alies. In Sardinia, the annual NATO military exercise is launched again. The anti-militarist groups on the island including STOP RWM hold the biggest demonstration throughout the city. In cross cutting, the archival footages of Sardinia present the history of the forced militarization by NATO against which the activists have fought for decades. Meanwhile, Jamal starts filming himself in Jeju island after a scandalous group arrival of Yemenis in 2018, and his ensuing travel al over the country to find a better job.

With another wars in Ukraine and Gaza ensued by the remilitarization of Europe, their struggles become more dire than ever. In spite of the yearlong attempts by ECCHR and its alies, the criminal court in Rome decided not to open the RWM case. STOP RWM now confronts the arms export from their island to Israel. Jamal, behind his dayly routine of loneliness away from his family, visits Jeju Island to renew a humanitarian visa of he and his family.

Still, their fights go on. ECCHR and its alies file the RWM case in the European Court of Human Rights in a firm solidarity with Mwatana. STOP RWM makes a successful blockade in front of the factory against the genocide in Gaza. Jamal starts his new job at the shipyard, a subsidiary of Hyundai that had produced Bahri Tabuk, a Saudi cargo ship that was used to transfer arms from Sardinia to Saudi Arabia during the war in Yemen.

[DIRECTOR’S NOTE]

When Cannelle, STOP RWM and Jamal raise a voice in the air, it creates a tremendously frail moment of volatility. Their spoken words soon vanish and their voice is rarely heard by the court, by the weapon factory, nor by the people around them. But their energy, anger, wilfulness stay there for a while, knocking on the wall of silence, shaking the manifolded layers of indifference. I wanted to capture these flimsy, ephemeral moments following their lonely fights.

This project was conceived when I heard the news about the group arrival of Yemenis in Jeju island in May 2018 and the xenophobic rumour thereafter. I felt the necessity to explain what had led them to this strange tourist island. As a migrant myself in Germany for years, I was also hoping this project could be a way of welcoming them. The quest led me to an unexpected journey, from the refugee issue to the arms trade, and to the war breeding system.

The forgotten war in Yemen was a prelude to the revival of the war machine and this film is a survival manual from the periphery where the war machine reached its arm in the first place and the Western countries stood behind it for their own interest. When Cannelle, STOP RWM and Jamal confront the system, face, and fist of the war machine with silence and voice, anger and hope, contemplation and action, we will see how their frail resistance could generate power. Now that the war machine, unleashed more than ever, serves the global autocracy on the rise, the civilian casualty in the war zones can not be considered less, as if someone’s humanity is negotiable. In a dehumanizing world like this, perhaps their journey might remind us of how we keep our humanity - in other words, where we could find a humanizing force in the era of remilitarization under the thriving autocracy.
